Narodowe Centrum Sportu lays down conditions for National Stadium contractors

2011-06-06

Narodowe Centrum Sportu (NCS), which is the operator responsible for the National Stadium in Warsaw, has given the contractor consortium a deadline of 14 days to repair faults discovered in the stadium's construction. Simultaneously, NCS has warned that the contract with the consortium could be terminated.
NCS informed the general contractor for the National Stadium – a consortium of firms from the group Alpine Bau, Hydrobudowa Polska and PBG – that it must immediately rectify a number of faults in the construction, and has also accused it of proceeding too sluggishly with the work. The most serious of the defects that have been uncovered is the faulty assembly of the cascading stairs, which makes it impossible to use the upper part of the stand, carry out work on the elevations, install fencing and turnstiles and lay the surface on the stadium's lower promenade. If the consortium fails to respond to the demands set by NCS, the latter will be entitled to withdraw from the contract. Since January 2011 the contractor has fallen increasingly behind the investment timetable – the schedule variance at the end of April this year was 16%. As a consequence, the contractor will not manage to meet the established deadline of 30 June 2011 set for completing the most important tasks at the stadium. NCS currently expects the contractor to prepare a repair programme and ensure its effective implementation.
