Fewer flats completed in December

The Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced that 16,762 flats were completed in December 2009, i.e. down 43.9% on the corresponding period of 2008. The total number of flats finished in 2009 as a whole amounted to 160,079, which represents a decline of 3.1% on 2008.
In December 2009 construction work began on 8,390 flats, i.e. 21.9% more than in December 2008. On the other hand, between January and December 2009 construction work began on 142,901 flats, which translates into a drop of 18.4% compared with the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, a total of 14,606 construction permits were issued last month, 5.8% below the figure achieved in December 2008. The total number of permits issued between January and December 2008 was 178,801, a decrease of 22.3% compared with 12 months' previously.
