KWB Konin investing in renewable energy
2010-02-12
Kopalnia Wegla Brunatnego Konin (KWB Konin)
is preparing a series of investments in renewable energy sources. Among other things, it intends to build a wind-generated power station.
KWB Konin wants to build the 175 MW wind farm in collaboration with the
Global Wind Energy Poland. It also has plans to construct a steam-oxygen installation for the gassification of wood-derivative waste as well as biomass combined with a high-efficiency co-generation system. The purpose of the investment is to achieve a significant reduction in CO2 and sulphur emmisions as well as emmisions of nitrous oxide and dust, while at the same time enhancing thermal performance.
Last year the mine began taking steps to build up its biomass efficiency. With this aim in mind it has begun planting Jerusalem artichoke on 4 ha of land – the plant is a source of biomass. A further 100 ha of land will be cultivated in the same year and another 500 ha of land in 2011. Eventually KWB Konin hopes to being growing Jerusalem artichoke on 1,000 ha of land.
