HIPH: 7.1 million tonnes of steel produced in Poland in 2009
2010-02-23
Steel output reached 7.1 million tonnes in Poland in 2009, i.e. down 27% on 12 months' previously, according to the Polish Steel Association (HIPH). Steel consumption, according to preliminary estimates, amounted to 8.1 million tonnes and thus fell 30% short of last year's figure. The
steel branch faced a tough 12 months in 2009 due to the economic crisis which hampered consumption. Output bottomed out between the end of 2008 and the second quarter of 2009. However, in May 2009 output began to rise gradually.
Positive changes are expected in the steel branch in the next few years. Major infrastructure projects connected with, among other things, Poland's hosting of the
Euro 2012 football tournament, should fuel demand for steel in the construction sector. HIPH predicts that steel production and consumption will grow steadily in the next three years, and by 2012 should equal the record-breaking year of 2007, i.e. 10.5-11 million tonnes and 12 million tonnes a year, respectively.
