Barlinek: sales suffer from long winter
2010-04-13
Barlinek, a manufacturer of natural wooden floors, sustained a sharp drop in sales in January-February 2010, which was a consequence of unfavourable weather conditions, which in turn discouraged people from renovating their homes, according to
Puls Biznesu.
Admittedly demand rose in March, but did not reach the same level as in the corresponding period of the previous year. As a result of the downturn on the domestic market Barlinek focused its efforts on foreign markets, where it currently sells the majority of its goods. The company's observations show that sales in Q1 varied depending on the geographical location. While sales were up moderately in the East the market in Southern Europe was clearly in crisis. The company is likewise seeking new outlet markets – midway through last year the company began exporting its floor boards to China.
Barlinek is currently operating at 85-87% of its capacity and some of its output capability may be used to manufacture new materials. The company has likewise launched production of solid wood flooring at its plant in Romania and also plans to make inroads in the two-layer flooring and exterior board market.
