In January-May 2010 r. a total of 53,053 flats were completed (including 2,220 in housing cooperatives, 27,338 in individual construction, 20,785 dwellings built for sale or rent; the remaining 2,710 comprised municipal, company and social rent housing units), which represented decline of 17.5% relative to corresponding period of 2009 r.
The most substantial increase in the number of completed flats was reported in voivodships: Opolskie (by 83.1%), Swiętokrzyskie (by 58.4%) and Podlaskie (by 31.2%). Mazowieckie again was the region with the largest number of new residential projects – investors completed over 11,000 flats. The capital city region was followed by Wielkopolskie with almost 5,500 completed dwellings and Pomorskie with almost 5,200 homes completed.
During the first five months of 2010, developers obtained permits to construct 23,900 flats, i.e. 14.8% less relative to the previous year, whereas the number of building permits secured by individual investors fell by 4% year on year to 39,800. Throughout the country, in the analysed period, all investors obtained construction permits for 66,500 housing units (a 11.1% decline compared to January-May 2009) and commenced work on 66,600 dwellings (increase by 26.5%).
In terms of the number of dwellings completed per 1,000 residents, the Pomorskie voivodship noted 2.32 housing units per 1,000 inhabitants, and Mazowieckie region noted 2.12. Dolnoslaskie took the third place with 1.79 dwellings per 1,000 residents. The lowest ratios were noted in voivodships: Slaskie and Swietokrzyskie (0.79 housing units per 1,000 residents each), as well as in Lubelskie and Lubuskie (0.90 dwellings per 1,000 inhabitants each). The national average ratio stood at 1.39, while in January-May 2009 it was 1.67, and 1.52 in January-May 2008.
